The Wild Brothers

Welcome to the world of the Wild brothers!

img_4984

Brothers Morgan, Hudson, Kian, and Asher Wild have grown up in the jungles of Southeast Asia. They, and their parents Mike and Libby, are missionaries to a remote tribe on the island of Papua sharing the good news of Jesus! They homeschool in their home in the jungle and explore the world around them, even collecting insects for scientists. They have made a scientific discovery, and were the first to collect a particular butterfly!

I have been fascinated watching what life is like for these missionaries from Florida, as they have taken on many aspects of the tribal culture, and are devoting their lives to the Lord and living for Him. They have been, and continue to be, such an encouragement to me. When I watch them in these DVDs, or read their writings on their blog, it makes me want to live for the Lord practically and daily. The four brothers are such fun to watch and learn from. They are a wonderful encouragement to follow the Lord while young and not to waste that time. Their parents also, are tremendous examples of doing what God says, trusting Him with their lives and the lives of their sons.

img_4982

As a bonus to these DVDs, they keep up a blog! (On the Answers in Genesis website). These posts range from informative, encouraging, interesting and fun, to challenging, insightful and thought provoking, often with an overlap of any of these.

It’s amazing to see and read of what goes into the task of learning a language and culture, and then to learn of how Mike and his colleague translate the Bible into the tribal language. How awesome it is to know of this specific story where God has changed so many lives as they have heard of Jesus!

As a young woman, I am additionally thankful for Libby’s example. She is a blessing to me as I see her faithfulness to the Lord in all the roles of wife, mom, and missionary.

Oh, and I did a little research on California laws…I so want a Common Spotted Cuscus! It is so cute!! Unfortunately, I won’t be getting one. :/

There are a total of eight DVDs which are available from Answers in Genesis or some are available on amazon. (We have pictured only the first three).

DVD 1: Welcome to Our World

DVD 2: Jewels of the Jungle

DVD 3: Paradise Lost

DVD 4: Tiger Trail

DVD 5: Island of the Gods

DVD 6: Changes in Latitude

DVD 7: Preparing for Departure

Ida Scudder

In an earlier post, we introduced you to the excellent book series titled “Christian Heroes: Then & Now” produced by YWAM publishing. In a recent YWAM catalog, the story is told of how these books are now impacting the lives of inmates across the nation. To date, these books have reached 550 prisons throughout the United States and God is using them to touch hearts and lives. To learn more about this, you can visit: Books With A Mission.

We have recently been touched by yet another story of a life well lived. “Ida Scudder: Healing Bodies, Touching Hearts” was an inspiring and challenging chronicle of a life devoted to practically showing God’s love to the people of India.

After nearly 60 years of service and approaching her 90th birthday, Ida finished her race here on earth. An Indian man spoke at Ida’s funeral; he was the General Superintendent of the hospital that she had founded. He said this of Ida:

“Only those who can see the invisible, can achieve the impossible. Dr. Ida Scudder has achieved the impossible through her close touch with the invisible God, through her faith.”

Ida Scudder_0.jpg

A week ago, the name “Ida Scudder” meant close to nothing to me. But now, as I have learned of the impact that this one life had as she was yielded to Christ, living to love, sacrifice, spend and be spent, I am reminded of what God might do through the obedience of one of His children and the impact that He wants to have through our lives. What Ida would have missed, and what the people of India would have missed, had she not given attention to what God was calling her to is staggering! We may never know how far reaching our obedience to Christ is in this life and in eternity.

God’s heart is for people and He chooses to use us to bring His light and life and love to those who do not yet know. The impossible is possible with our God who has no limits. “Unlikeliness” has nothing to do with anything when it’s God’s work done God’s way. Ida saw the invisible and achieved the impossible and the unlikely, because she walked with God…the same God that we too can walk with. Who knows what He might do in our day, if we live not for ourselves, but for Christ who died for us and rose again. Each of us have the opportunity to impact this world with the love of Christ. May this be our hearts’ prayer:

“…to love as You loved, and live as You lived, to never give up on giving You my life.”

(Song “Show Me What It Means” by Meredith Andrews)

Ida Scudder_4.jpg

Our family enjoyed listening to Ida’s story in the evenings using the audio version, which is identical in content to the book. If you want to be encouraged and inspired by this story, you can find the audiobook as well as the paperback book from the publisher, or you can find the paperback book on Amazon.

With All Our Energies

“If God would grant us the vision, the word sacrifice would disappear from our lips and thoughts; we would hate the things that seem now so dear to us; our lives would suddenly be too short, we would despise time-robbing distractions and charge the enemy with all our energies in the name of Christ.”

“See then that you walk circumspectly [carefully], not as fools but as wise,

redeeming the time, because the days are evil.”

Ephesians 5:15-16

Ecuador 1956

Here are some more books and a documentary as a follow up to the last post on the lives and deaths of the five men who were missionaries to Ecuador. So, if you haven’t read the last post, titled “Through Gates of Splendor”, go do that now to get the background for these resources! 🙂

One of the great features in this documentary, is that people are interviewed individually, including members of the Waodani tribe, as well as the widows of the five men. In these interviews, they share their memories and experiences of the five men and the events of that time in Ecuador and the years leading up to their time there. Another interesting feature is the original video footage of the men and their families.

I love this documentary.

Beyond (1)

Jungle Pilot is a biography of Nate Saint, the missionary pilot who served missionaries in Ecuador and who was also involved in the mission to reach the Waodani people. It is one of my favorite books. Included in this book are letters written by Nate as well as some of his journal entries. He had a gifting in writing; his writings are very interesting and help capture one’s attention. I love the insight into the story that this book gives as well as the window it creates through which we can look and get a glimpse into Nate’s thinking process, and his love and commitment to the Lord. Highly recommended!

Jungle

Rachel Saint was the older sister of Nate Saint and she too was a missionary in South America. After Nate’s death, she went to live with the Waodani tribe for 20 years, loving them and sharing Jesus with them, and remained with them until her death. Hers is another story of faithful service to the Lord.

Rachel

I’ve only recently discovered this book! It’s wonderful. This book begins with Jim’s childhood, continues with his growing up and college years, his life on the mission field, and then his final mission in life. It is filled with excerpts from journals and letters he had written, making this a much more personal book than what is sometimes found in biographies.

“Weaving together first-person accounts from friends with revealing excerpts from Jim’s own journals and personal letters, Elisabeth Elliot has crafted a stirring account of a man whose legacy will endure longer than he could have imagined.

“This gripping story of a life ignited by spiritual commitment will kindle within your own spirit a burning desire to enter fully and passionately into the adventure of faith.” (Taken from book cover)

Shadow

This book’s content is different from the movie of the same name. This book was written by Steve Saint, son of Nate Saint. Awesome book, and very humorous. This is the ongoing story of what has happened since the death of the five men.

Spear

This book was also written by Steve Saint and in it he shares stories of his life and his family’s life. For a time his family lived in the jungle with the Waodani. Very enjoyable and encouraging book.

Walking (2)

As with the book in the last post (“Through Gates of Splendor”), discretion should be used with all of these resources for young people, due to the nature and location/culture of the story. Some things also may not be appropriate for younger readers as the main characters in this story were in their 20s and 30s. Parents, reading these stories aloud to your children is a wonderful option as you can easily make them appropriate for your particular children, as you choose what information to read and what not to read. (Parents, you can also read these books, or watch the documentary, before handing them to your children if you feel your child is ready for this particular story.)

This list does not include all of the resources that are available on this missionary story, but this will get you started. 😉

Through Gates of Splendor

Let me introduce you to 5 young men who have been, for the last 10 years, some of my greatest encouragements to live life well; to live life in light of what really matters and will last….IMG_4977

Ten years ago this month, my parents, Rebekah, and I went to a missionary conference and among the speakers that day were Steve Saint and his friend Mincaye. Since then I have read (and re-read) the books and watched the documentary that records the remarkable story that Steve Saint and Mincaye are so intimately connected with. Through Gates of Splendor was the first book we read, and it tells so wonderfully the incredible story of the 5 young men (one of whom was Steve’s father), who moved from America to live in Ecuador as missionaries, eventually giving their very lives for the sake of the Gospel and the people God loves.

God has used these men: Roger Youderian, Ed McCully, Pete Fleming, Nate Saint, and Jim Elliot, to be an influence that has continued long past their lives on earth. Their lives ,    stories of devotion to God, and sacrifice, touched the remote tribe that they loved even to death, eventually bringing the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But, their story has touched many more, my life among the very many. I have found that while profoundly impacted by these men’s deaths, I in some ways, have been even more impacted by their lives. These were men who lived their lives for God, seeking Him and seeking to make Him known. In this book Elisabeth Elliot records, “From Rome, an American official wrote to one of the widows: ‘I knew your husband. He was to me the ideal of what a Christian should be.’”

IMG_4978

This book, Through Gates of Splendor, was written by Elisabeth Elliot. She was the wife of Jim Elliot, and after his death, went to live with the tribe that had speared her husband. The other wives were Barbara Youderian, Marilou McCully, Olive Fleming, and Marj Saint. These women are incredible examples of faithful, steadfast service to the Lord; they loved and served the Lord before marriage, while married, and did not stop when they became widows.

Barbara Youderian wrote after the deaths:

“I wrote a letter to the mission family, trying to explain the peace I have. I want to be free of self-pity. It is a tool of Satan to rot away a life. I am sure that this is the perfect will of God. Many will say, ‘Why did Rog get mixed up in this, when his work was with Jivaros?’ Because Rog came to do the will of Him that sent him. The Lord has closed our hearts to grief and hysteria, and filled in with His perfect peace.”

This month marks the 60th anniversary of these men completing their races that they ran, and ran well. May we receive from their examples encouragement, and a challenge to us, that we would lay aside every sin and the weight that so easily ensnares us, so that we might run with endurance this race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the Author and Finisher of our faith…

IMG_4980

*Due to the nature and location/culture of the story, this makes for a great read-aloud for children (the parent can choose what to read and what pictures to show). Rebekah and I first became acquainted with the story when we were ages 11 and 13 (and our mom read it aloud to us then – screening it for our ages).

This is just one resource (and the one I would recommend starting with) that tells the story of this missionary venture. I plan on referencing more books and a documentary  about this same event…so get this book here at amazon or here at CBD (link to the edition we have – you can check to see if there’s a newer one) and read it so you’ll be ready for more! 🙂

“Things to Find” Children’s Books

I sat in the back seat of the car as we began the 25-minute car ride to our destination. On either side of me sat two young companions. I had wondered how we might occupy ourselves during this drive. Before leaving my house, I had quickly grabbed a couple of books, among which was “1001 Things to Spot on the Farm.”

Children (2) cropped

In the early years of our childhood, my sister and I had spent many hours in one of those “hide and seek” books. As youngsters, it gave us a challenge to find an object, a color, etc. in the midst of a picture bustling with activity. Now that I was with these little ones, I had no idea if they would enjoy such a book in the same way that we had at their age. To my surprise and great delight, the book was wildly loved and we managed to spot all of the objects listed on every page during our round-trip journey!

Children (3) cropped

In our so often fast-paced, entertainment-driven society, we can forget that even the small things bring joy and wonder. We had a marvelous time with book-in-hand, spotting all of the objects. I think it benefits children to sit down for a time, to explore a picture, paying attention to small details, and learning to notice the little things.

Children (1) cropped

I think that life can resemble one of these picture books. So much happens in every chapter of our lives that it often requires taking a moment to stop and really see the things that are hidden. Life gets full, busy, and we get distracted. But, what if we took a moment to look for those hidden things…those blessings from God? Maybe we would discover that they weren’t hidden after all. They were there all along, but we did not see them because of our preoccupation with other things. What if we slowed down to notice and appreciate God’s involvement in our lives? I wonder how it would calm our hearts and bring joy in knowing that His loving hand is ever at work in our lives!

“Blessed be the Lord, Who daily loads us with benefits, The God of our salvation!”

Psalm 68:19

“Bless the LORD, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits.”

Psalm 103:2

We wanted to recommend books that could be enjoyed by a younger child and we think these are perfect. (Though you might like them too! 🙂 ) If you are interested in either of these books, you can find them by clicking on the following links. Both of these books are one, in a series of several, so you might want to explore the other options as well.

Before You Meet Prince Charming

Most girls want to one day be married. For many girls, that will be part of God’s plan for their lives. In the meantime, there are questions, struggles, and what can feel to be a time of waiting. How should a girl view this time in her life? Is there a way for her to truly thrive during her single years and prepare for marriage, instead of simply trying to avoid heartbreak and pain, as well as trying to not waste her single years?

This book addresses many questions and struggles that single girls can face. How should a girl navigate a crush? Is “dating around” the only way to meet her future husband, or are there other options? If there are other options, are there any advantages to them? While a girl is single – whether for a short time or for a long time – can she find joy, meaning, peace, comfort, and a purpose for her life? If so, how? Can a girl do anything now that will both make good use of her life presently and prepare her for a wonderful marriage?

Prince_1 (cropped)

Sarah Mally is a single young woman who both Rebekah and I look up to. She has used, and is using, her single years for a purpose greater than herself as she follows the Lord. We are encouraged by her example. Sarah wrote this book for single girls of many ages. She wanted to write a book on purity, preparation for marriage, and using one’s youth for the Lord, that would apply to older girls yet could still be read by girls as young as 12 and who, at that age, would be blessed by it and not hindered. Rebekah and I have found encouragement and practical suggestions in this book, from the time we first read it, until now as we re-read this book. Even at our ages we appreciate Sarah’s discretion as she seeks to give positive encouragement and examples, rather than very detailed information of what we are not to do.

As with any book that we read, we need to be sensitive to how the Lord is leading us personally and in our own families. There may be things that you personally don’t agree with in this book, but don’t let that stop you (as we have not let it stop us), from letting it challenge and encourage you onward toward godliness and the “set-apart” life. This book challenges many modern cultural ideas and mindsets. We as Christians need this. We may not agree with and follow every concept or detail, but we will greatly benefit if we let the Holy Spirit speak to our hearts, even if the communication flies in the face of what we’ve always thought or assumed.

Prince (cropped)

One of my favorite concepts that Sarah lays out in the book was this: my life purpose is not to get married, my life purpose is so much bigger because I have a relationship with God as my Father and He has a place for me in a plan that lasts long past my time on earth. This is so important because I, like many girls, greatly look forward to the day when I will be married. However, if I allow myself to be so wrapped up with thoughts directed by a longing for marriage, then my relationship with God and serving Him now (as well as my future), will be negatively affected. I believe that something Jim Elliot wrote to Elisabeth before they were married can apply to single women, “Let not our longing slay the appetite of our living.”

The more I meditate on God’s Word and am exposed to His thought pattern, the more His thinking will become my thinking. As this happens, one thing I will understand more and more is how short life really is; this will help align my perspective to reality – an eternal reality. Marriage is a wonderful gift, but it is not the only gift God gives. When a girl realizes that life’s purpose or value does not consist in marriage, she can then embrace and live in the good gifts God has given to her now and will continue to give to her…whether they include marriage or not. Many are still in need of hearing the message of the gospel for the first time. Many need to be built up and discipled in their walk with God. We have the privilege to do a work now that will outlast us and any earthly relationship. Each of us has been given an invitation to walk with God and get closer to Him in a living, daily relationship. Each of us has been given opportunities from God to be part of His work in some way. “Wherever you are, be all there, live to the hilt every situation you believe to be the will of God.” –Jim Elliot

If and when the Lord brings young men into our lives (for those of us to whom that applies), we can realize that that relationship is not something we are entitled to. It will be a gift from God. The flesh and the Spirit will war in how to conduct such a relationship before marriage. But, as we surrender to the Lord and allow the Holy Spirit to guide us in harmony with God’s Word, the Lord will lead us in that potentially challenging and very precious time.  I am grateful to Sarah for sharing her wisdom and insights to help clear away the fog of cultural mindsets and set a higher standard for this area of our lives.

Distant Fields: The Amazing Call of George Markey From Farmland to Missions

“The most important thing is to see where the Holy Spirit is moving

and get into the flow of the Holy Spirit.”

Distant Fields (cropped)

These words were once spoken to George Markey and seem to describe how George lived his life. In “Distant Fields: The Amazing Call of George Markey from Farmland to Missions”, Jed Gourley, son-in-law of pastor and missionary George Markey, chronicles the journey of one man who was surrendered and yielded to God, one man who was used by God because he not only believed in, but also followed Jesus!

We are blessed to have mutual friends of the Markey family. We have often received updates from our friends as to the current whereabouts of all of the Markey children. It was not only George who became a missionary. George’s wife, Pam, grew up serving the Lord in South Africa with her family. And now the children of George and Pam are literally all over the world ministering and taking the love of Christ to the lost and hurting.

One of my favorite parts in this book is when the Markeys were making their move from the United States to Ukraine and  brought all their children with them. (They ended up having nine children.) George and Pam’s ministry efforts were discouraged by some who thought that the Markey children would be a hindrance to the work. What some saw as a hindrance actually became their greatest blessing in the ministry! Isn’t that how God often works? God so often takes what the world, or even the church, thinks will work against us and He weaves it all together into something glorious!

Distant Fields_2 (cropped)

Anyone who reads this book will receive insight into the work of the Holy Spirit in a Christian’s life. They also will read of the pain and discouragement that came to the Markey family during a difficult time of betrayal. But, what could have embittered a family was used to drive them closer to the Lord. They chose to surrender it all to the control of God. Praise God that they did, because their lives of obedience, love, and self-sacrifice have made an eternal difference in many people’s lives on more than one continent!

We enjoyed “Distant Fields” together as a family. Though it was not written particularly for the younger reader, anyone can learn from George’s simple faith in God and His Word. Along with the many victories, this book is very transparent when it comes to the real-life struggles that faced George and his family in the ministry. At some point we too, like the Markey family, will probably know someone who says that he or she is a Christian, but then by their actions or words, misrepresent Jesus. When that happens, it can be confusing and shocking. When a person does things their own way, it’s not Jesus’ fault! It’s because they are letting their flesh control them and not letting the Holy Spirit control them. The Holy Spirit is also called “The Spirit of Christ”. If we allow the Holy Spirit to control our lives, then we will be more like Jesus. But, if we let our sinful flesh control us, then obviously our lives won’t look much like Jesus! If we are following Jesus, when a person does do something wrong toward us, we should remember a couple of things. First, that’s not the way Jesus is – Jesus is perfect. And second, it’s our response to the hurts done toward us that will make the difference. We can respond like Jesus! The life of George Markey is an inspiration and encouragement to not give up, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart! (Galatians 6:9) Only the Lord knows how many lives He touched through the obedience of this one man and his family!

The story of this modern-day missionary will challenge and encourage you, all the while strengthening your faith in the Word of God. You’ll enjoy the many amazing stories shared and insights given in “Distant Fields”.

Incredible Creatures That Defy Evolution

Incredible Creatures That Defy Evolution

Creatures_1 (cropped)

Science can be so fascinating! Probably my favorite topic in science is zoology. I am amazed at what allows a gecko to walk upside down on something as smooth as glass. I love knowing what keeps a giraffe’s brains from being blown out by extreme blood pressure, when it bends down for a drink of water and its blood travels with gravity instead of against gravity. Ostriches are big, but can they be dangerous? Yes, even a lion better watch out! So many people love horses, and they have some very special features that possibly not all horse-lovers know about. Dogs (certain dogs) are among my favorite animals. Besides being lovable and cute, dogs have some amazing abilities, such as some being able to know that a tornado is coming and then alert people of it.

Creatures_3 (cropped)

Dr. Jobe Martin was an evolutionist and later on became a creationist. In these three DVDs he talks about the amazing designs of many different kinds of animals and emphasizes that they were designed. If a giraffe had not been ready-made by a Creator, then partway through the evolutionary process certain functions would be only partway developed. This would be deadly for the giraffe even when it did something so simple as getting a drink of water. Besides that, the functions and abilities of these animals can only make sense if someone very smart put them all together.

The information in these DVDs is not only fascinating, but so important and helpful! This kind of information confirms that our faith is a reasonable faith! Believing in God, and believing that He made the world, is completely reasonable. Our belief is founded on fact and not fairy tales. Yes, God expects us to trust Him even when we don’t understand things, but our trust is founded on truth and fact…the truth of the Bible and the trustworthiness of God. The design of animals is one more proof for the existence of a powerful and wise Creator.

These DVDs include photos and video footage of the animals. The DVDs can be purchased at www.amazon.com and www.evolutionofacreationist.com.

Age recommendation: anyone interested in science, with one exception. The only problem I see is if someone who is still in the process of learning the English language (children) might misunderstand what is being said. In these DVDs, the evolutionist’s perspective is sometimes given. It could be helpful to children if a parent made sure that they understand what was being said. The other time those newer to the language might be confused is if sarcasm is used, as children do not always understand sarcasm. The topic of evolution and creation is a very important one, one that the Enemy uses effectively to get people to doubt God and His Word. If you are a younger person reading this, then know that these DVDs are showing how there is a God and it was God who made the animals.

We love these DVDs and hope they will be a blessing to you too!

Bob Schultz

“The one thing I want to learn in life is to understand and practically experience abiding in Christ. I’m not looking for some Bible lesson to discuss or some theory to question. I want to live in harmony with the One Who created the universe while I’m building houses, driving my truck, walking hand in hand with my wife or my daughters. I want to hear His voice, watch Him work, and follow Him in every adventure He wants to lead me through.”

(Everyday Battles – “Abiding in the Conqueror”)

Bob Scultz_0 (cropped)

LOVE these books! Bob Schultz has become a mentor and an encourager of ours. On certain days you might hear one of us telling another family member, “Today I’ve just been keeping my shoes tied.” (You’ll understand once you read his writings.)

From these books we’ve learned the battle plan for getting through a day that just isn’t going right, and for the day when one’s mind seems to be running on two cylinders instead of four. We’ve also learned that discouragement is really self-focus. Instead of being discouraged, a person can deny self and press on, tackling what lies ahead and continuing faithfully in one’s responsibilities. These are just a few gems that are packed into Bob Schultz’s books.

Most of Bob’s chapters are not long. And unlike storybooks, each chapter stands alone from all the other chapters. So you are allowed to turn to a chapter in the middle of the book and start reading. 🙂 You will be blessed and encouraged by the riches within. His writing style is simple, yet engaging, inviting, and inspiring.

As the real life stories and experiences of Bob Schultz converge with the rich lessons he learned as he walked through life with God, he gives insight and guidance on matters of confidence, contentment, God’s Word, temptation, overcoming fear, industry vs. slothfulness, leadership, plodding, keeping your word, daily decisions, forgiveness, faith, education, character, God’s purpose for battles and conflicts in our lives, seeing the heart of God in the ordinariness of everyday life, and abiding in our Creator.

Our family has grown to love Bob Schultz through his books – his love for God, his down to earth wisdom and stories, and his insights and encouragements that are so practical for everyday living. We were unaware of his move to heaven until a few years after it happened. When we did find out, we both were brought to tears. We felt we had lost a mentor. But he ran well, and he has left behind a treasure, for us who remain, in his writings. We are grateful.

And yes. These were written for boys. And yes. We are two girls. And yes. These books are wonderful for anyone. No matter the gender. No matter the age. These books are geared for young people and are great for young people. But, if a person didn’t get the benefit of these books while young, then they are just as wonderful for someone older. So, don’t let “BOYHOOD and Beyond” stop you from reading these to your daughters, or from reading them yourself if you’re not a little boy anymore, or stop you from reading them if you’re a young lady or older. Because, in our opinion, these go BEYOND boyhood. 😉

  • Age recommendation: on the cover of these books the recommendations vary between “Age: 12 – Young Adult” and “Ages 10-18.” We would imagine these could be read to even younger ages (depending on the chapter and the individual child).
  • These books can be purchased on Christianbook.com and amazon.com.
